Betty Bressi (1918-2014) became a well-known member of the Staten Island art scene after she moved here from Brooklyn in the 1970s.  An educator, poet, and self-taught artist, she worked in many media and preferred understated effects, and produced a body of abstract art that was celebrated in a posthumous exhibition at Staten Island Museum in 2014. In addition to her drawings and paintings, she worked in paper, and made paper compositions and baskets, or “vessels,” woven out of hand-colored strips of paper.  She also edited and produced Glassworks, a magazine of original visual art, prose, and poetry by local artists.  A winner of the Weissglass Prize at the Staten Island Museum, her work was also presented at the Museum of Modern Art, Manhattan.
